Technical teaching staff not receiving adequate CPD

21 March 2023

The Science Teaching Survey 2022 has highlighted that the majority of teaching staff in mainstream state schools have not received adequate CPD (Continuing Professional Development) in the last three years.

Respondents from state academies in England were more likely than respondents from other school types to report inadequate CPD in all three sciences. Whilst 16% of teachers and technicians in Northern Ireland reported they had received inadequate CPD.

15% of technicians said that more time for CPD would make a difference to their professional development. Almost half of the survey responses (46%) from technicians focused on pay and recognition as being the biggest positive factor for change.

The Royal Society of Chemistry said that the aim of its education strategy is to “ensure entitlement and access to high-quality subject specific professional development for teachers of chemistry throughout their career.”
