HEaTED introduces the new Operations and Engagement Manager, Sam Hansford. With a background in technical services and a passion for developing technical staff, we are thrilled to welcome Sam to the HEaTED team. Hear from Sam below:
I have been in a technical role for over 20 years, working at four Russell Group universities and finally coming full circle back to Sheffield in recent years. I have supported Academic research in the life sciences, horticulture, oncology and clinical trials to HTA & GCLP standard. I was headhunted to work as an overseas laboratory risk management consultant in Mexico and through the Technical Registration system, I became a Chartered Scientist in 2020. I am a member of the Institute of Science and Technology and I have a wide range of knowledge and experience of what it is to be a HE technician.
I am very pleased and excited to move into the role of Operations and Engagement Manager with HEaTED. It gives me the opportunity to champion the development and career pathway for HE technicians by working with facilitators for custom designed training courses which focus on the needs of HE technicians.

I have worked for over 20 years in a technical role supporting high class academic research at four Russell Group universities. I have a personal understanding of what it is to be a Higher Education technician so I am uniquely placed to help facilitators develop and align professional development courses to the needs of H.E. technical staff.
I am looking forward to the challenges and opportunities of my new role, and helping technicians develop their futures.
